Coaching Staff

Steve NordstromEvan Brandt
Head Baseball Coach

Evan Brandt is in his first season as the head coach of baseball at Finlandia University.

"We're fortunate to have someone like Evan to take over our baseball program," said Athletic Director Curtis Wittenberg.  "He is very familiar with Finlandia and the area having played and coached here.  Evan's passion and enthusiasm for the game along with his contacts in the mid-west will be an asset to the team and university."

A native of Eau Claire, Wis., Brandt earned two letters in baseball at Finlandia.  He worked for the Alma Center-Humbird-Merrillan School District before returning to FinnU.  Brandt helped in the development of Luke Paul, 2016 AD3I Player and Pitcher of the Year.  In addition the Lions have broken six team/individual school records, one career record (Joshua Gregory – stolen bases) and had the first no-hitter in school history (Joey Krug – 2017) during his tenure.

"I want to thank Curtis Wittenberg and Finlandia University President Philip Johnson for entrusting me with the program," said Brandt.  "This is a huge honor and I'm excited to take the helm and guide the program to new heights.  This is a special community here at Finlandia and I'm looking forward to helping build on that foundation.  I also want to thank coach Nordstrom for empowering me over the last two years and allowing me to grow as a coach. With that said I'm excited to start a new chapter with Finlandia baseball and help the university grow through athletics."

Steve NordstromLuke Paul
Assistant Baseball Coach

Luke Paul has been named the assistant coach of baseball at Finlandia University.  He had spent the 2017 season as a volunteer assistant.

"I'm happy to announce Luke Paul as my assistant," said head coach Evan Brandt.  "Luke is a great young coach and he has a bright future in baseball. He accomplished great things here at Finlandia as a player and that voice is one that our guys will love to hear from and one that demands attention. Luke provides a great amount of insight for our players and his high baseball IQ is a huge asset to our program moving forward. One of his best attributes is that he can relate to these guys. Luke is a recent grad and every struggle the players have is one he has recently had. He is a great person and a great role model for our young men."

Paul is no stranger to the campus as he had an outstanding baseball career for the Lions (2013-16).  In 2016 he had seven doubles, scored 14 runs, drove in 13 runs and batted .300 and on the mound was 5-1 with six complete games, 37 strikeouts and a 2.20 E.R.A. in 45 innings.  Paul was named the Association of Division III Independents Pitcher and Player of the year for his season.

Paul left his mark all over the record book.  He set season records for appearances (15- 2015), ERA (2.20 – 2016), strikeouts (59- 2015) and wins (5 – 2016).  Paul is the career leader in appearances (39), complete games (20), ERA (4.28), innings pitched (181), strikeouts (170) and wins (10).

A native of Hancock, Mich., Paul has a B.S. in Marketing.

"I want to thank Evan Brandt and the administration at Finlandia for giving me this opportunity," said Paul. "I'm excited to work with Coach Brandt and to give back to the university that has given me so much. I believe in the system that Coach Brandt is implementing in the program and cannot wait to see what we accomplish in the coming years."
